As a physiotherapist, I often recommend Pilates to my clients as a safe and effective way to improve core strength, flexibility, and posture. But many people ask me, "What's the difference between Reformer and Mat Pilates?" Both are fantastic methods, but they offer different experiences based on the equipment and style of movement involved. L
As the name suggests, Mat Pilates is done on the floor using just a Pilates mat.
The exercises rely heavily on body weight for resistance and often incorporate small props like resistance bands, Pilates rings, or hand weights. In comparison, Reformer Pilates involves using a specialized machine called a Reformer, which is made of a carriage, springs, pulleys, and straps. The machine provides resistance and support, which can either intensify or assist movements, making exercises adaptable for different fitness levels and rehabilitation. They both focus on controlled movements, improving core stability, balance, and overall strength.
A benefit of Mat Pilates is that it is perfect for building a strong core and stabilizing muscles but can be done anywhere with minimal space and equipment. Whereas Reformer Pilates offers more versatility and the ability to increase or decrease resistance. It's ideal for targeting specific muscle groups.

The answer depends on your goals. If you want to practice Pilates from the comfort of your home or you’re just getting started, Mat Pilates is a fantastic option. On the other hand, if you’re looking to take your Pilates practice up a notch with added resistance and more variety, Reformer Pilates might be the way to go.

Physiotherapist - Women's and Pelvic Health
I believe every Aussie mum deserves the knowledge and tools to feel strong, confident, and in control of their body. Too often, women are told that issues like incontinence and postnatal pain are just “part of being a mum”—but that’s simply not true.
I’m on a mission to break the silence around pelvic health by sharing my expertise for free, so mums can get the support they deserve. Through education, community, and open conversations, I want to empower women to take charge of their health and well-being.
